How Fast Websites Affect Search and Conversion

A slow website doesn't just annoy users; it kills organic visibility. The exact relationship between page speed, crawl budget, and revenue.

The Invisible Revenue Leak

Founders rarely notice page speed until it's too late. They browse their own website on the company Wi-Fi using a high-end laptop, and everything seems fine.

But out in the real world, a user is trying to load that same site on a mobile device while commuting. If the page takes five seconds to render, the user is gone. And they are never coming back.

The Search Engine Penalty

Google crawls the web with a finite budget. If your server is slow to respond, or your pages take too long to render, Google will crawl fewer of your pages. This means new content isn't indexed, and updates aren't recognized.

More importantly, Google uses Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS) as a direct ranking signal. If your competitors have fast sites and yours is slow, you will rank lower, even if your content is better.

The Conversion Penalty

The relationship between speed and revenue is linear and brutal. Amazon famously calculated that a one-second page slowdown could cost them $1.6 billion in sales.

For a B2B service business, a slow site destroys trust. If a tech consultancy has a sluggish website, the implicit message is that their technical competence is low.

The Usual Suspects

Why is your site slow? It's usually three things:

  1. Unoptimized Images: Uploading 5MB images straight from a camera instead of compressing them to modern formats like WebP.
  2. Third-Party Scripts: Loading ten different tracking pixels, chat widgets, and marketing scripts before the main content even renders.
  3. Cheap Hosting: Running a complex WordPress site on a $5/month shared server.

The next step: Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is in the red, fixing it should be your highest marketing priority.
