Evaluating a Partner
Choosing a digital marketing agency is difficult because the industry has very low barriers to entry. Anyone can build a basic website and claim to be an "SEO expert" or a "Growth Hacker."
When evaluating a partner, you must look past the pitch deck and interrogate their methodology. A bad agency doesn't just waste your retainer; they cost you a year of potential market share.
The Red Flags
1. Guaranteed Rankings If an agency guarantees they will get you to "#1 on Google in 30 days," walk away. Search algorithms are volatile and proprietary. Anyone promising guaranteed rankings is either lying or using black-hat tactics that will eventually get your domain penalized.
2. Focus on Vanity Metrics If their reporting focuses exclusively on "impressions," "clicks," or "keyword rankings" but avoids discussions about Pipeline, Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), or Revenue, they do not understand business. Traffic without commercial intent is useless.
3. Secret Methodologies There is no magic in digital marketing. It is a combination of technical architecture, high-quality content, and sustained digital PR. If an agency claims to have a "secret algorithm" or refuses to explain exactly what they are doing to your website, they are hiding incompetence.
What to Look For
A strong agency acts as a strategic partner. They will push back on bad ideas, demand access to your sales data to track lead quality, and focus relentlessly on unit economics.
The next step: Ask your prospective agency how they handle a campaign that isn't performing. If they don't have a structured framework for pivoting, they are just guessing.
