The B2B Buying Cycle
B2B lead generation is broken. Marketing teams are incentivized to produce raw lead volume, so they run broad LinkedIn campaigns offering a generic eBook. They generate 500 email addresses, pass them to sales, and sales rejects 99% of them as garbage.
This happens because marketing is optimizing for the click, not the close.
Aligning with the Buyer's Journey
A B2B enterprise purchase involves multiple stakeholders and takes six to eighteen months. Your lead generation strategy must account for this complexity.
1. Demand Creation vs Demand Capture Most companies only focus on capturing existing demand (bidding on "Enterprise ERP software"). But 95% of your market is not ready to buy today. You must create demand by consistently educating the market on the problem your software solves, even before they know they need a solution.
2. High-Friction Lead Magnets Stop offering generic checklists. If you want highly qualified B2B leads, offer something of immense proprietary value (e.g., an industry benchmarking report or a custom ROI calculator) and ask for detailed qualification data in return. A form with eight fields will lower your conversion rate, but it will dramatically increase the quality of the leads you pass to sales.
3. The Dark Social Reality B2B buyers do not make decisions based on an eBook. They make decisions by asking their peers in private Slack communities, WhatsApp groups, and at dinners. You cannot track this via Google Analytics. You must build a brand strong enough that you are the default recommendation in these private spaces.
The next step: Sit down with your top sales rep. Ask them what specific criteria make a lead "highly qualified." Retrofit your entire marketing funnel to capture only those criteria.
