SEO vs GEO: What's the Difference?

Search Engine Optimization focuses on links and pages. Generative Engine Optimization focuses on entities and answers. How to balance both.

The Shift in Discovery

For two decades, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) was the only game in town. You optimized a page, earned backlinks, and ranked in a list of blue links.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the new reality. Users are increasingly turning to AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) to synthesize answers directly, bypassing traditional websites entirely.

How They Differ

SEO is about Retrieval. Google indexes a webpage and retrieves it when a user types a query. The algorithm looks for keyword relevance, structural health, and authority signals (links).

GEO is about Synthesis. LLMs process vast amounts of data and generate a completely new answer. The algorithm looks for entity recognition, factual consensus, and information gain (unique data it can't find elsewhere).

The GEO Playbook

You cannot "trick" an LLM into recommending you. You must provide undeniable value.

1. Brand as an Entity The AI must recognize your brand as a definitive authority. This requires consistent mentions across high-trust digital platforms, clear schema markup, and robust digital PR.

2. Information Gain If your content merely rewrites what is already on Wikipedia, the AI will not cite you. You must provide original research, proprietary data, or unique expert opinions that force the AI to reference your specific page.

3. Direct Answers AI models favor content that answers complex questions clearly and succinctly. Remove the marketing fluff from your introductions and provide the factual answer immediately.

The next step: Search for your primary service on Perplexity. If your brand is not mentioned in the synthesis, your digital entity is too weak.
